A Memory Of Light

A Memory of Light: Book Fourteen of ‘The Wheel of Time’ by Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan

Blurbos Rating (4.7)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Overall, I loved the series, and thought it had a fantastic ending, though I do have a few small quibbles regarding A Memory of Light. A big complaint was that in the first half of the book, every time someone snuck into someone else’s tent (this happened a lot), the dialogue felt very “young adult.” The vibe of the dialogue and the relationships felt very different from previous novels. I remembered thinking that if I had to get through one more tent sneaking scene that I was going to put the book down and read Holly.

For the characters:

I’m happy that Moraine was there, but that was simply all she was – there. I feel like Moraine’s story was cut short by the end. It seemed as though there wasn’t really a plan for Padan Fain. I felt like it didn’t make a ton of sense, and was a bit anticlimactic. Mat could have died, and he would have had a better ending than the one he got. Specifically, Mat dying to the ruby dagger would have been an appropriate ending.

Egwene had a great ending. Amazing. Nynaeve and Lan both had a great ending. If Lan would have died, I wouldn’t have been mad, but I’ll take it. Faile and Perrin both had a great ending. I’ll take it. Rand had an excellent ending. I really believe his ending was perfect. Aviendha and Elayne were both amazing in the finale.

Androl was incredible. Ituralde finally gets his due in the end, after spending his entire part of the series getting his ass kicked.

There are plenty more, but I won’t continue to go on. The Wheel of Time was a wonderful series. It took a while to get through, but I’m glad to have read it, and I’m very satisfied with the ending.

“You have two choices,” Talmanes said, turning his horse and speaking loudly to the troop. “You can fight like the rest of us and help this world see new days, and maybe you’ll earn some coin in the end. I can’t promise that. Your other option is to sit here, watch people be slaughtered and tell yourselves that you don’t work for free. If you’re lucky, and the rest of us salvage this world without you, you’ll draw breath long enough to be strung up by your cowardly necks.”

Nynaeve continued to write as they entered. She no longer wore braids; her hair was loose around the top of her shoulders. It was a sight as strange as a ship with no mast.

If Mat were here, he would probably curse a lot, complain as much, then proceed to save them all with some battlefield miracle. Talmanes couldn’t reproduce Mat’s blend of insanity and inspiration, but his yell did seem to encourage the men.

“You would consider most of what we did during the Age of Legends to be crackbrained and irresponsible. That was a different time, Aviendha. There were many more channelers, and we were trained from a young age. We didn’t need to know things like warfare, or how to kill. We had eliminated pain, hunger, suffering, war. Instead, we used the One Power for things that might seem common.”

“It did. I can’t decide if I would have changed things, though. There were many good years. Good decades, good centuries. We believed we were living in paradise. Perhaps that was our downfall. We wanted our lives to be perfect, so we ignored imperfections. Problems were magnified through inattention, and war might have become inevitable if the Bore hadn’t ever been made.” He toweled himself dry.

A moment later, a gateway opened at the head of the path up to Shayol Ghul. Four figures stepped through. A woman in blue, small of stature but not of will. An aging man, white-haired and shrouded in a multihued cloak. A woman in yellow, her dark hair cut short, adorned with an assortment of gemstones set in gold. And a tall man, hair the color of living coals. He wore his coat of red and gold, but under it a simple Two Rivers shirt.

Lan felt a slight tug, and blood sprayed into the air. Demandred felt at the wound in his cheek, and his eyes opened wider. “Who are you?” Demandred asked. “I am the man who will kill you.”

He saw Elayne, captive and alone, a Dreadlord preparing to rip their children from her womb. He saw Rhuarc, his mind forfeit, now a pawn of one of the Forsaken. He saw Mat, desperate, facing down horrible odds. He saw Lan riding to his death. Demandred’s words dug at him. The Dark One’s pressure continued to tear at him. Rand had failed. But in the back of his mind, a voice. Frail, almost forgotten. Let go.

Demandred struck, and Lan saw his opening.
