I’m doing a reread of this series for a few reasons:
- The series is long, and I wanted to do a recap before reading Wind and Truth (which comes out December, 2024.
- The only highlights I was able to recover from my first read through were from Dawnshard and Rhythm of War. I wasn’t able to recover much from The Way of Kings.
- The series is just so damn good.
This series is a masterpiece so far. Definitely the best fantasy series going at the moment. Every book is a 5/5 for me (though I haven’t read Wind and Truth yet).
While every book is quite long, it’s very much worth it. I’d highly recommend giving it a go

The truth was that the action hid a second secret—Liss didn’t want anyone to know that the way she killed left corpses with burned-out sockets.

“Why?” Jasnah demanded, stalking forward. “He fought for you! He kept the predators at bay! My father wanted peace, you monsters! Why would you betray us now, of all times?” Gangnah drew her lips to a line. The song of her voice changed. She seemed almost like a mother, explaining something very difficult to a small child. “Because your father was about to do something very dangerous.”

The implication is that the Radiants could always dismiss and summon Blades—but for a time the ability was lost. It was only recovered when someone added a gemstone to his Blade. The fragment says the weapons actually shifted shape to adopt the stones, but I’m not certain if I trust that.

“Do not sorrow,” Wit said. “It is an era for tyrants. I doubt this place is ready for anything more, and a benevolent tyrant is preferable to the disaster of weak rule. Perhaps in another place and time, I’d have denounced you with spit and bile. Here, today, I praise you as what this world needs.” Dalinar shook his head.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? The distant voice sounded like rumbling thunder. Kaladin gasped and opened his eyes, and the pain crawled inside. Suddenly, his entire body hurt.

“The Plains are symmetrical,” Kaladin said. She froze. “How do you know that?” “I . . . it was a dream. I saw the plateaus arrayed in a wide symmetrical formation.” She looked back at her map, then gasped. She began scribbling notes on the side. “Cymatics.” “What?” “I know where the Parshendi are.” Her eyes widened. “And the Oathgate. The center of the Shattered Plains. I can see it all—I can map almost the entire thing.”

He saw it in her eyes. The anguish, the frustration. The terrible nothing that clawed inside and sought to smother her. She knew. It was there, inside. She had been broken. Then she smiled. Oh, storms. She smiled anyway. It was the single most beautiful thing he’d seen in his entire life.

Kaladin had thought his life terrible, but there was one thing he’d had, and perhaps not cherished enough: parents who loved him.

Helaran had been killed in Alethkar. At Amaram’s hands. Storms . . . I killed him, didn’t I? Kaladin thought. The brother she loved. Had he told her about that?

“You know how everyone kept saying there was a chasmfiend prowling about in the nearby chasms?” “Yes . . .” Kaladin lifted the remnants of his coat away from the table, revealing a massive green gemstone. Though bulbous and uncut, the gemheart shone with a powerful inner light. “Yeah,” Kaladin said, taking the gemheart in one hand and tossing it to the ground before Dalinar. “We took care of that for you, sir.”

This man was not sane. Szeth-son-son-Vallano was the most dangerous weapon on all of Roshar, and he was broken. Storms, why couldn’t this have happened on a day when Taravangian had more than half a wit?

It had worked. Just as the Diagram instructed, Taravangian was king of Jah Keved. He had taken the first major step toward unifying the world, as Gavilar had insisted would need to happen if they were to survive.

I have to tell someone sometime, she thought. I can’t do as Jasnah did, holding it all. This is too important. Was Dalinar Kholin the right person? Then she breathed back out, sending a cloud of shimmering Stormlight into the air between herself and Dalinar.

That squadleader had spoken to Kaladin after it was all over. Gotta do what you can to stay alive. . . . It made a twisted, horrible kind of sense. It hadn’t been Tien’s fault. Tien had tried. He’d still failed. So they’d killed him. Kaladin fell to his knees in the water. “Almighty, oh Almighty.” The king . . . The king was Dalinar’s Tien.

“Who are you?” Dalinar hissed. “I am the one left behind,” the voice said. It wasn’t exactly as he’d heard it in the visions; this voice had a depth to it. A density. “I am the sliver of Him that remains. I saw His corpse, saw Him die when Odium murdered Him. And I . . . I fled. To continue as I always have. The piece of God left in this world, the winds that men must feel.”

And the Blade itself . . . was it black? An inch or so of it had emerged from the sheath as it slid on the rocks. Szeth swore he could see a small trail of black smoke coming off the metal.
