Blurbos Rating (4.5)
I went into Mistborn: The Final Empire having already fallen hard for Sanderson through the Stormlight Archive, so my expectations were high.
The magic system is the star here. Allomancy, burning metals to get powers, has clean, hard rules. Once it clicks, the fight scenes turn into these awesome physics puzzles where you understand exactly why everything is happening. It’s all just really, really well thought out and explained, and a super interesting take. Very creative.
The worldbuilding is also really awesome, though super dark. Ash continuously falls from the sky. Mist rolls in every night. An immortal god-emperor has ruled for a thousand years and the world is basically broken. I really enjoyed that it’s all built like an Oceans 11 story, but like a crew of thieves deciding to rob, and topple, an actual god.
The death that happens about 70% through the book was NOT something I saw coming. That kind of blew me away.
I decided to pick this one up because of the movie announcement, so I figured I needed to read the books before the movie comes out.
One thing that’s interesting that I didn’t expect though was: I felt like I needed a break after reading it. So I’m not going to jump straight into the next Mistborn book. I’ll get around to it, but I think my next world jump will be into a classic of some sort.

Prologue
He smiled, holding up hands and arms that were lined with layers and layers of thin scars. They covered his skin, running lengthwise, as if some beast had repeatedly raked its claws up and down his arms.

Well, scamming noblemen and obligators was a very dangerous profession—but it certainly beat working in the forges or the textile mills.

Chapter 2
If all went well, there would come a time when Kelsier would want to be seen and recognized. For now, anonymity was probably better.

A collection of metal flakes floated in an alcohol solution within. Iron, steel, tin, pewter, copper, bronze, zinc, and brass—the eight basic Allomantic metals.

Gentlemen, this will be no ordinary job. It’s going to be different from anything any crew has ever tried to pull. We’re going to help Yeden overthrow the Final Empire.”
Silence.

Allomantic theory teaches of ten metals: the eight basic metals, and the two high metals. However, there is another one, unknown to most. One far more powerful than the other ten.”

As far as Kelsier was concerned, any man who upheld the Final Empire also forfeited his right to live.

Even if he hadn’t found the atium, any night that ended with a group of dead noblemen was a successful one, in Kelsier’s opinion.

“What’s there to earn?” Kelsier said, pulling out his own cloak. “This is who you are, Vin.”

“Kelsier,” Vin said softly. “He’s a good man, isn’t he?”
Sazed smiled. “A very good man, mistress. One of the best I’ve known.”
Vin nodded slightly. “A good man…” she said. “I don’t think I’ve ever known one of those before.”

Few men, Allomancers or not, would fare well in a fight with a Keeper whose anger had been roused. That was probably why the Ministry had hunted the sect virtually to extinction.

Chapter 10
“We claim to be doing good,” Ham said. “But the Lord Ruler—as God—defines what is good. So by opposing him, we’re actually evil. But since he’s doing the wrong thing, does evil actually count as good in this case?”

Kelsier glanced down at the small whitish bar in his hand. The Eleventh Metal. He knew the rumors about it—he’d started them. Now he just had to make good on them.

Are there any religions on your list that include the slaughter of noblemen as a holy duty?”
Sazed frowned disapprovingly. “I do not believe so, Master Kelsier.”
“Maybe I should found one,” Kelsier said with an idle smile.

“Every skaa knows in his heart that it is the greatest of crimes to take up arms in defense of the Final Empire.”
Vin nodded numbly. She felt … wrong.

Besides, didn’t the Lord Ruler have some right to his place? He’d defeated the Deepness, or so he claimed. He’d saved the world, which—in a twisted sort of way—made it his. What right did they have to try and take it from him?

The Lord Ruler hadn’t saved mankind; he had enslaved it instead. Reading a firsthand account, seeing the Lord Ruler’s self-doubt and internal struggles, only made the story that much more tragic.

“Gold and atium are complements, like the other metal pairs,” Kelsier said. “Atium lets you see, marginally, into the future. Gold works in a similar way, but it lets you see into the past. Or at least it gives you a glimpse of another version of yourself, had things been different in the past.”
