The Fellowship Of The Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Theoman’s Rating (5)

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This was a re-read, and since I haven’t read this trilogy in over a decade, it was a long time coming.

Everything about The Fellowship of the Ring is perfection to me. Since I’ve watched the extended movies repeatedly (and since they’re so well done), I get the hype of just revisiting those moments that match up, while also experiencing the joy of moments that didn’t make it into the movies (I’m looking at you, Tom Bombadil).

I’ll admit, I had a hesitation going into The Council of Elrond, for some reason remembering it as a bit of a slog, but on this re-read, even that chapter flowed like the Anduin. It’s such a great epic adventure that I thoroughly enjoyed. I’ll be continuing the trilogy, so those will be my next two posts.

Highlights

As for any inner meaning or ‘message’, it has in the intention of the author none. It is neither allegorical nor topical.

This book is largely concerned with Hobbits, and from its pages a reader may discover much of their character and a little of their history.

The beginning of Hobbits lies far back in the Elder Days that are now lost and forgotten. Only the Elves still preserve any records of that vanished time, and their traditions are concerned almost entirely with their own history, in which Men appear seldom and Hobbits are not mentioned at all. Yet it is clear that Hobbits had, in fact, lived quietly in Middle-earth for many long years before other folk became even aware of them.

‘Behold the Argonath, the Pillars of the Kings!’ cried Aragorn.

Upon great pedestals founded in the deep waters stood two great kings of stone: still with blurred eyes and crannied brows they frowned upon the North. The left hand of each was raised palm outwards in gesture of warning; in each right hand there was an axe; upon each head there was a crumbling helm and crown.

Frodo turned and saw Strider, and yet not Strider; for the weatherworn Ranger was no longer there. ‘Long have I desired to look upon the likenesses of Isildur and Anárion, my sires of old. Under their shadow Elessar, the Elfstone son of Arathorn of the House of Valandil Isildur’s son, heir of Elendil, has naught to dread!’

And behold! in our need chance brings to light the Ring of Power. It is a gift, I say; a gift to the foes of Mordor. It is mad not to use it, to use the power of the Enemy against him. The fearless, the ruthless, these alone will achieve victory. What could not a warrior do in this hour, a great leader? What could not Aragorn do? Or if he refuses, why not Boromir? The Ring would give me power of Command. How I would drive the hosts of Mordor, and all men would flock to my banner!’

‘What have I said?’ he cried. ‘What have I done? Frodo, Frodo!’ he called. ‘Come back! A madness took me, but it has passed. Come back!’

‘But I am going to Mordor.’ ‘I know that well enough, Mr. Frodo. Of course you are. And I’m coming with you.’
