The Two Towers: Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings

The Two Towers: Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Theoman’s Rating (5)

Rating: 5 out of 5.

An incredible continuation from the Fellowship, and this is where you really start to see how the timeline in the books is different from the movie. We also see a new ring bearer in this one that we did not experience in the movies.

The entire arc of Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas is incredible and epic. Meeting the Ents is a really wonderful part of the story, with hearing their bits of history, and seeing them work themselves up into attacking Saruman.

The entire Gollum experience is amazing. Sam and Frodo’s trek with Gollum is consistently engaging.

There’s just little bad to say about The Two Towers. It’s an overall incredible journey through the middle of The Lord of the Rings.

Highlights

A mile, maybe, from Parth Galen in a little glade not far from the lake he found Boromir. He was sitting with his back to a great tree, as if he was resting. But Aragorn saw that he was pierced with many black-feathered arrows; his sword was still in his hand, but it was broken near the hilt; his horn cloven in two was at his side. Many Orcs lay slain, piled all about him and at his feet.

Before them in the West the world lay still, formless and grey; but even as they looked, the shadows of night melted, the colours of the waking earth returned: green flowed over the wide meads of Rohan; the white mists shimmered in the water-vales; and far off to the left, thirty leagues or more, blue and purple stood the White Mountains, rising into peaks of jet, tipped with glimmering snows, flushed with the rose of morning.

They had come to the desolation that lay before Mordor: the lasting monument to the dark labour of its slaves that should endure when all their purposes were made void; a land defiled, diseased beyond all healing – unless the Great Sea should enter in and wash it with oblivion. ‘I feel sick,’ said Sam. Frodo did not speak.

‘Stew the rabbits!’ squealed Gollum in dismay. ‘Spoil beautiful meat Sméagol saved for you, poor hungry Sméagol! What for? What for, silly hobbit? They are young, they are tender, they are nice. Eat them, eat them!’ He clawed at the nearest rabbit, already skinned and lying by the fire.

For Sam still stood upon his feet, and dropping his own sword, with both hands he held the elven-blade point upwards, fending off that ghastly roof; and so Shelob, with the driving force of her own cruel will, with strength greater than any warrior’s hand, thrust herself upon a bitter spike. Deep, deep it pricked, as Sam was crushed slowly to the ground.
